Deep Purple- Smoke On The Water
Deep Purple’s biggest hit was Smoke on the Water. Few people know that the atmospheric rock anthem was inspired by actual events. A flare gun was fired during a Frank Zappa concert in Switzerland causing venue to go up in flames, Deep Purple, there for a recording session, watched the fire from their hotel on the other side of Lake Geneva (thus “smoke on the water.”) The song was included in the 1972 album Machine Head. Smoke on the Water became the band’s signature tune and was played live at all their shows even after tow band members quit in 1973.
