The synthesizer-backed vocals and fun, empowering message were embraced not only by females, but also by audiences of both genders. The music video of the song was also a hit, and cemented Lauper’s place as a pop icon of the 80’s. Nearly 30 other bands and artists have covered the song. Girls Just Want to Have Fun reached to top of many charts during 1983-84.
