His stage name is Akon, but Aliuana Badara Thiam is a Senegalese-American hip hop and R&B singer-songwriter who first earned mainstream success in 2004 with the release of Locked Up. He later earned a Grammy Award nomination for Smack That, and 21 of his songs have reached the Billboard Hot 100. He is the first ever music artist to hold both the number one and number two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 charts twice. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Akon branched out to pursue a music career and collaborated with top artists including Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Beyonce amongst others.
